Maureen was a champion in sports and was a fan of rough, competitive sports. The passion for sports was matched by an unnatural talent for performing. She was awarded nearly all Feis Award for Theatre and Drama the country could provide. Her acceptance was at the Abbey Theater by age 14 and was able to pursue her dream of classical and opera. Charles Laughton was mesmerized after watching the Maureen screen examination. He was captivated by her beautiful eyes. Laughton together with his co-star Erich Pommer changed Maureen FitzSimons names changed her name to "Maureen O'Hara" which was a shorter name that was used on the marquee before casting the actress as a part of Jamaica Inn, (1939). Maureen was contracted by Laughton to shoot her next film in America with RKO Pictures (The Hunchback of Notre The Dame, 1939). Maureen could buy her contract with Laughton following the film's success. an enormous success. Maureen was just 19 when she appeared alongside Laughton in two movies.
